Summer 1 Week 2

In year 2 have we have been working hard this week to create animal poems. In writing we have been learning all about the features of poems and focusing on using similes, alliteration, adverbs and expanded noun phrases.

In maths we have been practicing our workings for addition and subtraction. We have also been problem solving. Give your child some addition and subtraction questions to try at home!

Year 2 are looking forward to our Longleat trip on Thursday.

We hope you all have a lovely bank holiday weekend!

Welcome back! Summer 1 Week 1

The year 2 team would like to welcome you back. We hope you had lovely Easter breaks!

The children will now begin their new topic… Animal Kingdom! The focus of this topic is ‘why do animals live where they do?’. The children will become animal experts and create animal masks and poems.

In maths we will be focusing on reading scales such as thermometers and rulers before recapping our learning of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

We hope to see as many entries as possible into the reading raffle this half term… so get your reading logs filled up!

Happy Easter!

This week we have been learning about how Christians celebrate Easter. We re-told the Easter story and thought carefully about how the story made us feel, some parts were sad, but some parts were happy. We looked at how Christians celebrate this story. We thought about how we have celebrated Easter before, and what we might be doing this year. Then finally we looked at how people in other countries celebrate Easter, we found out some very surprising things, for example how people in Sweden dress up as witches and visit their neighbours to give them a painting or a drawing in return for sweets! We thought this was a bit like our Halloween.

What time is it?

For the last two weeks we have been learning how to tell the time. We have looked at analogue and digital time. The children are now able to look at the hands on a clock and tell if it’s o’clock, quarter past, half past or quarter to the hour. They also know that on a digital clock these times are represented by the digits 00, 15, 30 and 45. Some children were even able to tell the time in 5 minute intervals! Then we moved on to working out the duration between times, so between 3 o’clock and half past 3 there are 30 minutes. Ask your child to read the time on your clocks at home!

Minibeasts!

We have been out searching for the Unseen World of Minibeasts. They are everywhere, but we rarely notice them. Over the next couple of weeks we will be reading stories about Minibeasts, like The Bad Tempered Ladybird by Eric Carle, as inspiration to write our own Minibeast stories. Next time you’re outside with your children, in the garden or at the park, maybe you could have a look for some Minibeasts and see which ones you can find.

Unseen World

Our new project is called ‘Unseen World’. We found a box of seeds in each of our classrooms, and we have planted them to see what they grow into. We wondered if seeds have to grow in soil, or if they could also grow in different things. Each class has set up an investigation to find out, some are trying to grow seeds in sand, on a paper towel, or even in water. We are going to look closely at all the different parts of a plant, including the parts we can’t see, the unseen parts, which are usually in the soil.
